HOW IS COVID-19 AFFECTED ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY ?

By: Nir Furman

April 22, 2022

The last two years since the COVID-19 pandemic started, we are witnessing big changes in the everyday life and the affection of the pandemic on the social relationships between people. One of the things that got effected the most is the music industry. How many times did you go to a live concert in the past two years ? Seems like the music industry changed and continuing to change due to the pandemic. What are the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the music industry ? As a huge music fan and a musician myself, it is important to understand where it all goes and how everyone can adjust to the new changes. To understand better the changes and the affections of the industry we need to understand how the music business is working.

THE MUSIC BUSINESS

The music industry is a very big business that worth over than $50 billion (Hall). The industry’s main income is through live music and recorded music. The live music is one of the biggest ways in which the music industry makes its money, mainly by selling tickets to live performances. The second way of the music industry’s income is recorded music that can be sold and streamed.

WHAT’S HAS BEEN CHANGED ?

  1. Relationship between the artist and the fans

As the pandemic hit, concerts and live show almost all over the world were canceled. Artist and performers realized that they will not be able to perform in front of their fans, and fans understood that the concert that they have been waiting for got canceled. This situation has created a big frustration for both sides. One of the things that changed because of social distance restrictions is the direct fan and artist meetings. It did not only affected the relationship between both fans and artists, but also affected financially on the music industry business. Now we can see different and other ways of fans and artists relationship. You might say that these days came back to what it was before the pandemic, and we have all the shows back, almost without restrictions, and you will be right. The changes that we are facing have not necessarily replaced live performances and social relationships, but added a new way of how the music industry looks like today.

ADJUSTMENTS

We can see that the music industry adjusts to those changes in couple of different ways. Now when we realized that the relationships between the fans and artists has changed, we see how artists and performers are taking the power to their hands and connecting with the fans directly through social media. We can see a huge new scene of the music industry when more and more artists creating their own channels and perform music live from home. Recording labels sometimes provide live streaming equipment to performers. The pandemic forced the fans to listen to music in a new way, possibly be able to contact with their favorite artists and be part of a new scene that will be in addition to live performances.

  1. The music industry looks different

A different kind of performances and music clips started to come up as the music industry tried to keep the audience and bring them something new from their favorite artists. One of the examples that we have is a musical production of Oscar Sansom, the director of Forest of Black Studios. He described this new opportunity as a new genre for the live performance scene. While thinking of how he can make the band’s Biffy Clyro gig, that had to be livestreamed without any fans, Sansom came with the idea to separate the band from the world even when performing without audients. There were a glass cube that was built in a way that the band could only see their own reflection, without even being able to see the producers and the camera and sound operators. This situation creates a feeling when the band and the audience can feel the social distance in other way, creating more tension and letting us feel the missing interaction between artists and fans. Seems like the response to the new reality, bringing the creative minds of the music industry, to make more interesting way to stream music, do live performances and make music.

Addition to the normal life before COVID-19

As part of the adjustment to the new world, the music industry finds another thing that can be offered to the audience as a solution to the social distance problem. We can see these days that a lot of performances went online, since many audience so it as an opportunity to enjoy the show and the live performance from home. Different venues and performance spaces decided to invest in live stream equipment to be able to do both online and live performances, sometime even at the same time. An example of that we can see in a venue called Barbican in London. To bring the shows online, a installation of new cameras all over the concert hall, trying to provide the audience different and comfortable point of view. Those new options continuing to create a new scene of media. Fans will be able to listen to music and watch concerts from different angles and options that not necessarily were developed before the pandemic. We can agree that the pandemic brought new options with it and made the people to think differently in order to keep the industry to run and work during the pandemic.

  1. Education

The education system itself changed a lot because of the pandemic, but the music education has some very interesting changes that I would like to share with you. The pandemic caused a huge use of technology to make music and teach music. Now when music classes in went online, some of the older generation teacher (and not only) had to learn to use technology, software, microphones to provide the best music class and make it feel like it is regular in-person class. Professors and instructors have more online opportunities, and adjust their knowledge to something new as they have different platforms and applications. They can offer their courses ‘virtually’. Because all of that, we are witnessing more and more options to contact with professors and teachers that all over the world and learn music in a high level. This new way of education also helps to create music together but individually, professors help students to create musical parts at home, record it and then combine and learn how to work technologically.

Part Two:

Rhetorical analysis to composition

My composition is based on a lot of data and information collected from the internet and also based on self-experiences. I can tell that the data is very credible since its all based on facts and events that were happening in the past two years. My audience are people who interested in the music industry in its all aspects. They might be musicians, music industry people, artist, students and educators. In general, my compositions provide information for everybody who wants to understand little bit more about how the music industry works after the pandemic days. The tone of my compositions is very easy and friendly. I am trying to reach to a wide audience range; therefore I am trying to combine a formal, friendly and easy writing. The tone is going to help me to provide my statement in a better way and be more understandable.  The first’s composition genre is a magazine article. the features of this genre are pictures, talking straight to a specific audience, question, and answers. I decided to use this genre because my audience is a specific audience, even though it is a wide range of people. Those people might look into music magazines or music groups that talk about the industry and the changes that happening. The second’s composition genre is a poster, that inviting people to a meeting. The features of this genres are picture, direct information, not a lot of words while answering and covering the topics that will be talked in the meeting. The medium for the first composition is a website. It can be an article that posted in a specific magazine site. Another mediums of this genre can be a hard copy of the magazine. Sometimes, it can be streamed in TV or the subject can be talked on a podcast. But then the genre is changing even though the information is the same. The second composition can be posted as a hard copy poster, or be posted as a social media content, such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and more. The releasing date of the compositions has to do a lot with the post pandemic adjustments of the music industry. The live performances are coming back in a lot of different ways and the social distance restrictions almost disappeared. All that new information is collected into one article (first composition) and a meeting and master class (poster) that will provide a better point of view on the music industry and the world after the pandemic. The timeline of the first composition started to with how it was before the pandemic. The cultural expectations in my opinion are very global. A lot of people just trying to understand where the world is going to in terms of entertainment. A big part of it is the music industry that trying to adjust to the new works and basically ask the same questions. Because it is a global issue, the expectations are global and might contain everyone. My stance on the topic is very optimistic, and while I am providing facts about the new changes, I am trying to show it as a good changes. My way of writing making the reader feel like they are part of the content, and it makes my stance be more welcoming and less intense.

One of the things that really hard to achieve while writing an article, is that you (as the author) cannot really get back the actual reaction of the audience for this topic. This is why my second composition, which is an poster for a meeting, might help to get over this communication issue. In the meeting that the poster promotes, people will be able to ask questions and get answers right away. Which makes the conversation and the communication much easier. The difference between the Inquiry-based essay and the composition, is that those compositions are more specific and less hard to process. The essay is a lot of information that written in a very formal way, compare to the compositions that are more friendly and easy going.

Part Three:

The model essay that I based my work on is “10 Ways the Coronavirus Will Change the Music Industry” by Adam Aziz.
https://www.okayplayer.com/music/ways-the-coronavirus-will-effect-the-music-industry.html

The article is talking about the changes in the music industry and posted in the Hip-Hop magazine “Okayplayer”.

  • We can see the author starts the article with an introduction of the topic and talking about the fact that the music industry has changed a lot since covid started.
  • After writing the introduction and explaining he gives the information about the things that changed due to the pandemic. We can see that the information divided by topic, while each topic is another change of the music industry.
  • Aziz uses pictures and videos from real events that helping to understand better each topic.
  • The closing of the article is basically with no conclusion, just the end of topic number 10. We can see that the stance of he author is very positive but seems like he doesn’t have actual opinion about the subject, since he provide the facts and analyses them.
  • The time that the article was published was the middle of the pandemic, when thigs were not clear about how the music industry going to look like. This is why we can see that the author talked about things that will be changing in the future (which is now present).
  • The tone of the author is not very formal, since the audience of this magazine are regular people who likes Hip-Hop music and wants to know more about the music industry.
  • The writing is easy to access.
